Green Mountain Youth Symphony Waltz Night is Coming! The young musicians of the Green Mountain Youth Symphony, including Malone Bruce and Jin Wei Rahill of Rumney School, have been putting in extra practice time in preparation for the first annual GMYS Waltz Night, to take place on Saturday, March 13th from 7 to 10 PM in the auditorium of the Montpelier City Hall. This is a family-friendly event featuring live waltz music performed by the three orchestras of the Green Mountain Youth Symphony, and will feature a dessert bar, a silent auction, and fun prizes. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for students/seniors, and children under five are free. Tickets can be purchased at Vermont Violins at 24 Main Street in Montpelier, or can be purchased directly from an orchestra member. The evening will feature several interactive points throughout the Kid’s Corner from face painting to fire making so grab your little ones for an evening of fun and frolicking! Friday, April 23rd 6:00 – 7:00: Northfield Savings Bank is proud to present the Swing Peepers! The Swing Peepers, a vocal-harmony and multi-instrument duo, perform inventive, earth-friendly and interactive songs and stories. The Swing Peepers are lively, improvisational, and endearingly goofy. Instruments strummed, swung, and tapped include: guitar, mandolin, harmonica, banjo, ukulele, accordion and egg-shaker. Most songs and stories are participatory, and body movement is part of the action! Central Vermont’s Best Family Value: $3 per person gets you all three nights at the show! Upcoming Events at the North Branch Nature Center: Naturally Nicaragua Benefit Dinner, March 13 Come join local youth for a dinner to benefit their natural history and service trip to Nicaragua. Teens will create a wonderful meal of enchiladas, rice and beans, salad, and dessert. Join us throughout the night for entertainment including Jairo and Gabe Sequeira (5pm), playing traditional Latin American music, a fabulous band from Northfield High School (7pm), as well as Planting Hope, presenting about their February trip. Also, don’t miss out on the silent auction, with unique items from generous area businesses! The fee is $10 for an adult, $5 for a child (under 12 years old). Take-out also available for $10. You can also call us at (802) 229-6206 to register over the phone. ‘Ghost Bird’ Showing at Green Mountain Film Festival The true story of an extinct giant woodpecker, a small town in Arkansas hoping to reverse its misfortunes, and the tireless odyssey of bird watchers and scientists searching for the holy grail of birds, the elusive Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Although considered extinct 60 years ago, bird watchers refused to accept its passing. Then, scientists from Cornell University announced that it had been found, but had it? Scott Crocker’s new documentary was hailed in its recent world premiere at Hot Docs as “comic, mesmerizing and deeply poignant”. This investigative doc is reminiscent of the work of Errol Morris in the way it casts a spell while telling a story and building a case. Two shows both at City Hall Arts Center! Amphibian Monitoring Program Training Sessions For the sixth year, NBNC will host trainings around Vermont to educate communities about a little-known mass migration that takes place each spring in which thousands of amphibians flock from their wintering sites in forest uplands to vernal pools and other wetlands to breed. It’s spring fever for amphibians! But these creatures need help getting across roads that lead to high mortality. Come to one of our trainings and learn how you can be part of this volunteer effort. No registration necessary. North Branch Mushroom Club: Arctic Fungi (lecture) Saturday, March 13, 10:00 a.m. Fee: free. Dr. Lawrence Millman, scientific advisor for the North Branch Mushroom Club, will suggest some possible ecological activities for the newly formed Club. Then he will give a presentation on Arctic fungi, focusing at once on fungal adaptations to the cold and the degree to which Arctic fungi might be affected by global warming. North Branch Mushroom Club: Winter Polypores (field trip) Saturday, March 13, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Fee: $25 members, $30 nonmembers. Dr. Millman will cure your mycological cabin fever by leading a winter mushroom foray. Possible sightings might include over-wintering polypores, small cup fungi, pretzel slime molds, and maybe even a few overlooked rarities. Don't expect to find edibles (unless you're a squirrel)!

Middlesex Food Shelf: Every Saturday from 9:00 - 10:30 am at the Middlesex Methodist Church, across from Town Hall. A wonderful, free resource for families. They also have dry dog and cat food for the family pets. Please visit them on Saturdays.
